Coad Cup · 2026
Among the many trophies and pieces of silverware lining Ranelagh’s history sits a modest-looking chalice known as the Coad Cup. At first glance, it’s easy to overlook. But like so much at Ranelagh, its story runs deep through the club’s history.
The trophy traces its roots back to the earliest days of the club, first won in 1882 by Frank Wynne (Ranelagh’s founder and inaugural captain) before later being claimed by WH Coad in an 1883 five-mile steeplechase. Decades later, in the summer of 1947, the cup was presented back to the club by SE Coad with the wish that it should continue to be raced for annually in a five-mile cross-country event.
Fittingly, the summer of 1947 itself became famous for its relentless heat. After one of the coldest winters on record, Britain sweltered through a scorching “Vintage Summer”, with temperatures repeatedly climbing above 30°C.
Nearly 80 years later, the Coad Cup returned in conditions worthy of the trophy’s remarkable history, taking place on the hottest May day ever recorded in the UK. Most sensible people were searching for shade, cold drinks and reasons not to run at all, yet 43 hardy Ranelaghs still gathered to vie for the Coad.
From the outset, this year’s edition quickly became less about times and more about judgement, resilience and survival. The pre-race briefing urged caution, hydration and sensible pacing, while the start time was adjusted to avoid the worst of the evening heat. Course marking in 35°C became a feat of endurance.
Still, as ever, the show went on.
At 7.20pm, the first runner was set off, with everyone else following based on their handicapped times. The heat hung heavy over Richmond Park. Officials wilted somewhat. Oh, for an ice cold beer, cider or anything with a cocktail umbrella affixed to it.
To pass the time, genial chatter filled the air. There was even a slight breeze. Eventually, the cry of “RUNNER!” was issued.
There in the distance, coming around the final bend of Sidmouth Woods and racing intently towards the finish by the manhole, was a seemingly cool, calm and collected Colette Doran.
Setting off early and running brilliantly from the front, Colette had judged the conditions superbly to hold on for victory in 48:14, claiming this year’s Coad Cup with a composed run in exceptionally difficult conditions.
Behind her, Ray Betts produced one of the runs of the evening. Starting over nine minutes later, he had carved his way through the field to finish second overall in 49:55. Guest runner Roger Bell crossed shortly afterwards, meaning third place and the bronze medal position was awarded to Duncan Brown. Well done to our first three finishers (and guest).
Impressively, despite the oppressive heat, there were strong performances throughout, with Maia Rushby, Rachel Revett, Rebecca Bissell and Aleksandra Sznaber all running well in brutal conditions, while Marc Leyshon, David Ready and Joe Killip all recorded eye-catching late charges from the back.
More importantly though, the evening once again captured what our club races are really about. On a night when nobody would have blamed anyone for staying at home, 43 runners still turned up, supported one another and embraced the challenge together.
Fastest 3 ladies were Rachel Revett (40:14), Rebecca Bissell (40:28) and Aleksandra Sznaber (44:12). Fastest 3 open were Joe Killip (28:06), Marc Leyshon (29:29) and David Ready (29:33). Well done to everyone who took part in one of the toughest Coad Cups in recent memory.
Huge thanks, as always, to the organisers and volunteers who helped with timing, results, marshalling and supporting runners on an exceptionally hot evening. As always, without your help, none of our races would be possible.
The final word goes to our outgoing handicapper, Bruce McLaren, who will soon step down after five years in the role. He leaves these sage words for us: “The trouble with being the handicapper is that you get to, and have to, mark your own homework every week. And it’s never right. That said, it’s been a privilege to take on the role, and one that is surprisingly enjoyable.”
Thank you very much for everything, Bruce. We’ve enjoyed it too.
