Race Roundup

▪️Cabbage Patch 10:

On Saturday 19 October, 49 Ranelaghs - 18 ladies and 31 men - toed the start line in Church Street to answer the annual 10 mile ‘call to cabbage’.

First 3 Ranelagh ladies home were Lizzie Broughton (1:06:32), Lucy Urbas (1:07:04) and Natalie Haarer (1:09:31). Extra kudos to Lizzie who placed 2nd in her age category.

The first 3 Ranelagh men home were Joel Peirson-Hagger (57:24), Marc Leyshon (57:50) and James Whistler (59:01). In what was a blisteringly fast field, Joel placed 38th overall; while Marc and John Tovell claimed 4th and 5th in their respective age catergories.

A huge well done to all runners.

▪️Milocarians Invitational

On Saturday 25 October, a small but determined handful of Ranelaghs made the journey to Sandhurst to take on 5.5 miles in the Barossa Nature Reserve.

With Verka Lafieulle supporting; the 4 Ranelagh roses of Carol Aikin, Sally Bamford, Rebecca Bissell and Colette Doran led the charge, with Ted Mockett as the sole thorn.

Lured by the promised of the legendary Sandhurst tea, our women ran strongly to claim 2nd ladies team, while Ted placed a commendable 10th overall, despite running an extra 750 metres. Well done to everyone.

▪️Surrey Masters XC Champs

On Saturday 25 October, six of Ranelagh’s distinguished gentlemen took on 6–9 km at the beautiful Nonsuch Park.

In contrast to the greying follicles, the early rain clouds quickly parted - like male pattern baldness — to reveal a bright, cold and sunny day. Perfect conditions for the event officials including Narissa Vox, on duty that day as Chief Marshal.

Shout out to David Kew who completed 6 km in a commendable 39:12 to claim 2nd M80. At the younger end of the line-up, Bruce McLaren (43:49) and Andrew Mclauchlan (43:49) dug deep to complete 9 km, placing 24th & 25th respectively in the M55 category.

Meanwhile in the M50 category, Graham Weller ran outstandingly to take 9th M50 in 35:04, while Neil Rae finished 23rd with a self- proclaimed ‘good run’ of 40:11. Last but not least, with all of his hair intact and in-colour, Olaf Waternack held on in a tough M45 field to cross the line in 36:20.

End of year awards

Our club’s strength comes from the diversity, dedication, and spirit of our members - which is why we are launching our inaugural End of Year Club Awards at this year’s Xmas Party.

We want to celebrate and recognise the many ways our members contribute to making Ranelagh a welcoming, inspiring, and vibrant community.

With categories celebrating more than just athletic performance, these awards are all about honouring the people who help Ranelagh thrive — with nominations and winners chosen by you, our members.

Now it’s your chance to shine a light on those who motivate, support, or brighten the club in their own way, and put their names forward for recognition.

Whether through achievement, encouragement, or simply adding a bit of fun to every session, please nominate the members YOU think make a difference — and help us celebrate the heart and soul of our club

NOMINATE BY SUN 2 NOV @ https://forms.gle/WvARif6Hv8awDjJHA ⬅️

Training

With the evenings getting darker earlier, a reminder to please wear hi-vis clothing at all times — not just during training, but also when travelling to and from the clubhouse or track. Plus don’t forget your lights or head/chest torches - staying visible is key to staying safe.

For Tuesdays’ sessions, please meet at our clubhouse for 7pm.

On 1 November, the Richmond Park deer cull will commence for up to 7 weeks. During this time, pedestrian gates will be locked from 20:00 until 07:30, 7 days a week and Tuesdays’ training schedules will be adjusted to reflect this.

For Thursdays’ track, please meet at Osterley track for 7.30pm.

Aimed at improving speed endurance, track is suitable for all levels and ideal for those those looking to improve. There’s a great social and encouraging aspect to track, with everyone - across all pace groups - training together and supporting each other.

Plus you can tailor the session to suit, making it ideal for those coming back from injury.

Volunteering = Officiating

A huge thank you to our volunteers manning the Cabbage Patch 10 Mile 7 water station on 19 October. Not only were you guys the ultimate sight for sore eyes; your energy, time, and dedication was key to making the event a success.

If you’ve enjoyed volunteering, why not take the next step and become an England Athletics official?

Just like any other sport, athletics events rely on officials to keep things fair and running smoothly. Without them, races couldn’t happen.

There’s currently a shortage of qualified officials in Surrey, putting events at risk of cancellation — but you can help change that.

Becoming an official is a great way to gain new skills, meet fantastic people, and make a real difference to the sport you love. You’ll help keep running in Surrey thriving and ensure events continue to inspire the community.

If you’ve already been volunteering, you have the perfect foundation - all you need is enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. England Athletics provides full training and ongoing support, with plenty of encouragment from our club and county.

To find out more, please contact Narissa Vox or Simon Martin via the WhatsApp Community, or visit the England Athletics website
