June Reminders

Howdy Ranelights.

As expected, June is fast becoming a packed month full of ‘fun’ things everyone can take part in. All the better to get out there and enjoy the longer days and the fabulous weather, we say.

We have a few reminders for you but before that, a Ranelagh public service announcement about our favourite (not) little creature; the ticks of Richmond Park.

With the warm weather, our little ‘friends’ are out in force and while their preferred cuisine are the deer, they’ve definitely not been adverse to having a munch on us.

So please take the appropriate precautions by covering legs, wearing insect repellent and checking for ticks after running in the park. There’s further info about these 8 legged fiends below - plus some great advice on the General Club Chat about repellents.

Anyway, please read on for some timely reminders..

1. RANELAGH 10K

▪️12 days (ARGGGH!) until our 10K on Sunday 22 June, and as always, we still need everyone’s help on the day as we’re anticipating 600+ runners.

We really need more marshals to help out in the Ham area, from 8.45am until 10.30am so please message Narissa or Hadi via WhatsApp Community, or email coordinator@ranelagh-harriers.co.uk ASAP if you can help.

The route goes from Riverside Drive Playground, taking in the towpath by Teddington Footbridge, before turning at Half Mile Tree (stump), and then looping round again through Burnell Avenue and Beaufort Road.

We also have roles available if you can only offer a limited amount of time, and roles that are compatible with running the race.

In return for your help, we would like to offer a FREE coffee or ice cream from our race vendors at the start or finish, as well as post-race THANK YOU drinks on Tuesday 24 June @ The Fox & Duck from 8pm.

2. Petersham Road resurfacing works

Petersham Road will be closed for resurfacing works from Monday, June 23 to Friday, June 27, 2025, between 9 PM and 5 AM each night. The closure will be between the Star and Garter Hill and Meadow Close.

During this time, bus routes 65 (to & from Kingston) will be diverted through Teddington and Twickenham via Kingston Bridge and Richmond Bridge.

The 371 will be divided into 2 sections; buses from Kingston will terminate at Sandy Lane, and buses from Richmond will turn back at Star & Garter Hill towards George Street.

The road will be open as usual outside working hours but we would advise cycling (or running) to the clubhouse to & from training (and the Fox & Duck Volunteers Drinks) on 24 June.

3. reminders

▪️Track Curry Night | Thursday 12 June | Gymkhana Club: A reminder that after this Thursday’s track session will be the monthly social at the Gymkhana Club for curry. Any questions, please contact Marcus or Maia via WhatsApp Community.

▪️POSTPONED Ranelagh Quiz Night: Apologies but our much anticipated Quiz Night will be postponed to later on in the year. Our social team look forward to welcoming you instead to the 10k Volunteers Drinks on 24 June at the Fox & Duck - so EVEN MORE reason to volunteer!

5. KIT ⬇️

All kit orders are ready for collection, every Tuesday at the clubhouse from 6.30pm.

Alternatively, you can message our Kit Secretary Agnes via WhatsApp to arrange collection from TW1 1RB.

The kit store is also still open, with limited stock and sizes available but hurry cause these are going fast.

6. TRAINING ⬇️

A reminder that for Tuesday's session, please meet at our clubhouse for 7pm; and for Thursday's track, please meet at Osterley Park track for 7.30pm.

To our new joiners, those on a taster session and our C25k beginners; a BIG HELLO - welcome to Ranelagh. We hope you enjoy yourselves.

A reminder to dress appropriately (keep cool), to stay hydrated before, during and after all your runs and training sessions (but also don’t drink too much!), and to allow plenty of time for your body to adjust and aclimatise.

Do check in on each other, especially as the heat and humidity increases and if you feel faint, dizzy or not well, please slow down or stop running.

Also, tick season will soon be upon us; so please take the appropriate precautions by covering legs, wearing insect repellent and checking for ticks after running in the park.

And the following advice from The Friends of Richmond Park:

Ticks are small creatures, related to spiders and mites, that feed on the blood of animals and sometimes people. Ticks can survive in many places but prefer slightly moist, shady areas such as bracken, bushes and leaf litter. They can be found in both long and short grass.

Ticks can't jump or fly, so they have to wait until an animal (or human) brushes past to attach to their skin. The tick population peaks between spring and autumn (March to October).

Lyme disease or Lyme borreliosis, is a bacterial infection spread by infected ticks. Human infection is uncommon, because only a small proportion of ticks have the infection. However, those ticks that may carry Lyme disease are common in the countryside, especially woodlands and parks with deer, such as Richmond Park.

Please see
the Government advice on tick bites and the prevention of Lyme disease for more information. The Visitor Centre has free Information leaflets produced by Lyme Disease Action and tick removers for sale.
