Baker Cup · 2025

Records are a little hazy but the first known Baker Cup event was held in 1911, which makes sense as the cup itself was presented in 1910; by then Club President (1912 – 1920) and one of our longest-serving members, Fred W Baker (75 years).

Whilst this handsome cup has prevailed, the course however has changed over time; until 2021 it was held on Ham Common while prior to that it took place on Middle Road. Possibly due to the increase in pedestrian & bike traffic, the mixing of which with runners going full pelt across 5km being of some concern, it was eventually moved to the (then) quieter road by the Ballet School; where it now continues.

The course features two ‘lovely’ loops starting from the side of the Ballet School, down to Sheen Roundabout, back up to a turn point before Pen Ponds carpark and round again to the side of the Ballet School. A slightly undulating distance of approx. 5 km / 3 miles, masking a test of pacing.

The weather was glorious, strong sunshine and gentle warmth; tempered by stronger than average winds - making the race a little more challenging than usual. 34 athletes collected their numbers, ready to toe the start line. First to be set off was the lovely Katrina Roche; the first of the Inter 3 squad participating. Minute by minute, name by name, each were set off at their alloted times, with guest Peter Robins, in his maiden Baker, with the honour of being scratch.

The spread was such that some had come round to start their second lap before all the runners were set off; so there was a bit of guess work in trying to work out who was leading. Eventually all the runners had come through for the second lap. For a brief interlude, the timekeepers were able to enjoy the sunshine.

Then over the crest after the Ballet School, the first runner came into sight. Leading and moving ever so well was Sara Simon; running strongly towards the turn point at Pen Ponds. Behind her were other Inter 3 runners, including Beverly Walsh and Katrina Roach - would any of them be able to overtake her?

More runners crested the rise. Mike Peace came forth, then Jackie Dunkley, then more and more runners until it became too difficult to tell who was who. But Sara was undeterred; she kept her cool and reached the turn, continuing full of purpose and determination. By the time she reached the rise towards the finish, her lead was unassailable, and she crossed the line confidently to take the Baker Cup and a gold medal in 30:31. Well done Sara!

A minute later, Felix von Schubert (22:46) placed second overall, followed 30 seconds later by Beverly Walsh (35:21). The Inter 3 sweep continued with 4th & 5th claimed by Katrina Roche (36:20) and Jackie Dunkley (30:49). Fab running everyone!

After everyone had crossed the line, there was the mass troop to the clubhouse for the prize giving and Carol’s much anticipated tea. Shout out to the fastest 3 ladies; Sarah Palmer (17:46), Molly Riglin (18:24) and Cordelia Parker (23:46). The 3 fastest open were Peter Robins (15:31), Gareth Hopkins (16:20) and Sarah Palmer (17:46).

Huge thanks to all the race officials, marshals & volunteers for their unwavering support & commitment to making the event happen.

Later that evening, everyone met up for the traditional Baker Cup Supper & Prizegiving; wonderfully organised by our social team, led by Hadi Khatamizadeh. (Almost) the entire family silver was on display; and the hugest of shout outs to Maia Rushby, Rebecca Bissell and Jonny Smith for a sterling (ha ha) trophy presentation job.
