Women’s Beginners Course
Every year (usually starting in April/May) Ranelagh hosts an 8 week running course based on the “Couch to 5K”. It is aimed at complete beginners or perhaps women who have had a long break from running. It culminates in a fun 5k around Sidmouth Wood in Richmond Park supported by the club.
Last year would have been the 25th anniversary of the course. It started in 1995 when the sports development team from Richmond Council asked all the clubs in the borough to put on special events to encourage more women to become involved in sport. Frances Ratchford (a future president of the club) hosted the first event and remained involved until 2011 when Deborah Blakemore (a beginners course alumni herself) took over as the beginners coach.
The course is a stand-alone event within the club however all participants are encouraged to join the club if they would like to and are fully supported by the coaches of the different groups to make the transition. Many current members of the club are alumni of the beginners course.
