Ranelagh Rundown #210 … an Indian Summer🌞

Well done to everyone over the last week who have been busily running in the glorious October weather. A real shame this Indian Summer will come to an end shortly and winter will descend upon us but that means….. Cross Country Season and Christmas parties are nearly upon us… a great reason for us all to be cheerful.

Reviewing Strava shows a lot of us busily preparing for exciting races coming up – groups were recc’ing the Cabbage Patch for next Sunday, some serious sessions for the Cross Country opener next weekend as well as some great long runs in preparation for upcoming marathons including Bilbao and Valencia.

Lots going on as always …… so let’s get into it

🔶 Firstly a gaggle of Ranelites (what is the collective noun for a group from Ranelagh? A ramble? A Run? A Runaway?) journeyed to the Windy City to compete in the 5th major of the year – the Chicago Marathon. By all reports it was an awesome event experienced by all. Some absolutely outstanding performances by our team “just” behind the winner Kelvin Kiptum. Worth pausing for a moment on this – wow – 2:00:35 and a 34 second world record. Sub 2 hour is not far away now. Sifan Hassan was nearly as impressive with the 2nd fastest time EVER!

So for Team Ranelagh… congrats to all

🔷Saturday parkruns again saw Ranelites spread their respective wings across the globe with Clare and Jeremy Day in Vienna, Alex Ring in Chicago, Fiona Jones in Washington DC and Sue Camp in Belfast as well as some very fast running closer to home with half a dozen Ranelagh men under 18 mins at Bushy Park!

🔶From a Ranelagh Ultra perspective, as always there a couple of shout outs..
– Rick Jenner smashed out 36th place in Lakes in a Day. 87km with 4600m of elevation in the wind and floods.. epic performance
– Joe Killip decided to run across Wales for three days (sounds like a great idea)
– Suzy Whatmough and James Ritchie recc’ing the last 45kms of the South Wales traverse

🔹🔸Announcement no.1 📢

This is a club-wide call for volunteers – we need EVERYONE’S help for a large variety of marshalling duties as we host the 1st match of this season’s Surrey League on Saturday 14 October in Richmond Park. The event will be quite large and so we need as many people as possible to ensure the event’s success.

These races take place thanks to the volunteers who marshal the course and record athletes’ times and places at the finish. It is a significant undertaking for host clubs and all offers of assistance from clubmates, friends or family out on the course or at the finish, will be greatly appreciated, even if it’s only for one race.

So whether you volunteer all day or just for a few hours, it will all be very helpful.

Duties will vary, according to experience but where applicable, training will be provided – the majority of roles require no experience at all. Kindly note that all minors MUST be accompanied by an adult over 18 years old.

To volunteer, please fill in this simple form AS SOON AS POSSIBLE: https://bit.ly/surreyvolunteer2023 👈

If you’re unable to fill in the form or have technical issues, please email ranelaghfixtures@gmail.com with the following details:
