Ranelagh Rundown #209: No Squirrels

Wow, there’s lots to cover this week, so let’s get stuck right in!

πŸ”· Is Thursday the new Sunday? Your correspondent noted quite a few Ranelites getting their long run in on Thursday, including Marianne Malam (“sunshine and showers HM“), James Russell (captivatingly titled “Just another run” πŸ€”πŸ˜†), though noting James also did another HM on Sunday… on the way to the Vitality 10k 😱 – but more on that below… and Bruce and Rick casually running 34k in Surrey Hills.

πŸ”Ά Continuing on the vague theme of Sunday (πŸ€”) the Strava segment “Church” has been getting more attention than usual this week. This somewhat niche segment (think Nightingale Lane but straight up/ down on the other side of the Rose of York and more trail-like underfoot) was originally the brainchild of Jim Graham who would make regular multiple trips of worship as part of his hill training. Other more hill-hardy souls took note and James Riley created the segment to mark hill training sessions of worship, with James Ritchie also having done some crazy multiples of it in the past. Suzy Whatmough was the first to give it some noteworthy attention this week, picking up the ladies’ crown and second on the overall leaderboard (to Nick Impey) – though it appears she was trying to snatch another crown and want even aware of the “Church” segment. To add extra drama, enter stage left Ed Forbes, who then nabbed the crown from Nick Impey while having a “most excellent hour“!

πŸ”Ά A noteworthy parkrun – parkrun Pioneer James Russell completing a monumental 700th parkrun πŸ˜±πŸ‘ŒπŸŽ‰ Well done James on your consistency and dedication to parkrun and to convincing so many Ranelites down to Denbies/Mole Valley to celebrate with you! πŸ’™πŸ’›

πŸ”· Berlin Marathon – you’re probably aware of the Berlin Marathon, but of increased prominence in the Club this year was the Berlin Inline Skate Marathon! Yes, it’s not running, but how could we resist including it, when the self proclaimed “Ranelagh Rollers” – Narissa and Pete Vox and Mark Herbert – participated?! Described by Narissa as “utterly epic, completely exhilarating & totally mad, uber FAST street skate on super smooth roads πŸ₯³”. Plus, you can earn a “skate to run” place the following year… with Narissa claiming she’s “definitely back next year“, is anyone else feeling strangely tempted…??

In the more traditional Berlin (running!) marathon were Chris Lepine (2:51) Jarryd Hillhouse (3:08), Amanda Munro (5:19), Andrew Kew (5:46) πŸ’ͺπŸ’™

πŸ”Ά Also racing this weekend at the Ealing half were Tony Borreda (1:18 and 17th overall), Rebecca Bissell (1:50), Aoife K (1:48) Carol Aiken (2:09), Andy Griffin (1:50), Neil Kitching (1:35), Becca Ireland πŸ’ͺπŸ’›

πŸ”· And let’s not forgot to congratulate Vitality 10k runners James Russell, Jon Lear, Stephen Hird and Stacey Mills πŸ‘ŒπŸ’ͺπŸ’™

πŸ”Ά Other race shout outs to Vaughan Ramsey picking up a “sneaky” British Masters silver medal and Ric Motti on completing his first triathlon in Dorney Lake

πŸ”· A shout out are all those training hard for Chicago Marathon in a few weeks (in addition to some mentioned above are Kathy Henry, Alun Thomas, Sue Lear, Alex Ring , Mark Herbert), with lots of final long runs in the bag this weekend – this is the point where the training feels hard, but you’ve done the hard work now, bring on the taper πŸ’ͺ (and let’s try to avoid the taper tantrums, eh?! πŸ˜‰)
